Building Bridges for Brain Health: Successful Community Event for Indian and Fijian Indian Elders

We are delighted to share the success of our special brain health community event, held in collaboration with Age Concern Auckland on Monday, 11th August. This event, tailored for the Hindi-speaking Indian and Fijian Indian community, was a vibrant celebration of culture, connection, and brain wellness.

The event featured an informative talk by Professor Rita Krishnamurthi, our project’s lead for Indian and Fijian Indian community and a renowned expert in brain health and ageing. Speaking to an engaged audience of over 50 older adults, Professor Krishnamurthi shared practical advice on:
Understanding dementia and its risk factors.
Activities and lifestyle to boost brain health.
The importance of social connection in healthy ageing.

The talk was delivered in a welcoming environment, allowing attendees to ask questions and share their experiences in their first language.

The event was a core part of the IDEA Programme’s commitment to health equity and ensuring our research is co-designed with and for the diverse communities. By meeting community members where they are, we can build trust, share knowledge, and ensure our study findings lead to real-world solutions.

A huge thank you to Age Concern Auckland for their invaluable partnership and on-the-ground support.

This event marks a significant step in our ongoing journey to understand and improve brain health for all. We look forward to hosting more events like this across our communities.
